Every busy freelancer keeps an informal list of clients who pay slowly. Nobody publishes it and nobody mentions it in the rejection email. It simply becomes a reason that the answer to next year’s enquiry is sorry, I’m full.
The arithmetic on their side
An independent on sixty-day terms who invoices at month end is often waiting ninety days from the day the work started. For someone billing 150 days a year, that gap is the difference between a business and a slow-motion crisis.
They cannot fix it by charging more, because the problem is timing rather than total. They fix it by choosing different clients, which is a decision they make silently.
What it buys you
A reputation for paying in fourteen days does three concrete things.
It gets your enquiry answered first. When someone has two enquiries and capacity for one, prior payment behaviour breaks the tie. It is the only thing in the comparison they have direct evidence about.
It lowers your effective rate. Several people will quote a known fast payer below their headline, because the risk premium is gone. You will rarely be told this is what happened.
It survives a bad quarter. The freelancer who is loyal enough to move things around for an emergency is the one who has never had to chase you.
Where the delay actually comes from
Almost never a decision to delay. It is a purchase order that was never raised, an invoice sitting in one person’s inbox, a vendor onboarding form that required a document nobody asked for, or a payment run that happens on the 28th and missed by a day.
All of which are fixable, and none of which are visible from the outside. From the freelancer’s side, an unpaid invoice looks identical whether the cause is cash flow or an unticked box.
The cheap fixes
Raise the purchase order before the work starts, not with the invoice. Give the freelancer the name of the person who processes payment, not the generic inbox. Tell them the date of your payment run so they can invoice against it. And when something slips, say so before they have to ask.
That last one costs nothing and is remembered for years.
